Still life

During this session I undertook a series of still life drawings. I split my time equally between three tables, each with something different for me to draw. Table 1: Physical type, Table 2: Life's a box and Table 3: Objects. I used a variety of materials, including: Pencil, fine liner, greyscale markers, coloured markers and charcoal.

Physical type: To begin with, I focused on one letter that really interested me and I kept this first study really simple- only using pencil and fine liner, as this is what I feel comfortable with. In my next study I moved on to use charcoal in order to reach darker tones to draw the 'B'.

Simple fine liner drawing.
Experimenting with pencil/ charcoal shading.

Life's a box:
I moved out of my comfort zone and had a go with the grayscale markers. I found these really enjoyable to work with and I want to experiment further with these. I even used the coloured markers to add some of the details on the boxes. I found the use of these markers to be very effective.

An accurate, measured drawing, using pencil and
grayscale markers.
Another accurate drawing, but this time I
 added colour.

Objects: For this study I wanted to try and capture the entire table, instead of focusing in on one object. I wanted to practise my shading technique and because of this, I stuck to pencil for this drawing. If I had more time I would have liked to have captured more of the details and intricate items that were on the table.
Pencil shading, trying to capture the light/ shadows
effectively.
I definitely think that my most effective study was the 'life's a box' illustration. I think that the markers worked really well for what I wanted to achieve- showing where the light hits and where the shadows occur.
